Information Regarding the Marigold Strings Program

The Marigold Strings Program is offered to students in Grade 5.  The classes will be held in the gym on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:45 – 11:50.

The Strings Program is focused on the development of correct playing technique on a string instrument, ensemble and performance skills, and note reading.

Your child will need:

  • a violin, viola or cello
  • a shoulder rest for violins and violas, rosin specific to the instrument & end pin strap for cellos
  • Measures of Success Workbook for your child’s instrument. These books can be purchased at Tapestry Music (Unit 3 – 772 Bay St., 250-590-0752) or at Long & McQuade  (756 Hillside Ave., 250-384-3622)
  • a 1″ black binder & pencil
  • a folding wire music stand

String instruments can be obtained through a rental or a rent-to-own plan at a music store or from the School District #61 rental program.  Please consider what the best option will be for your family.

For families interested in renting from Tapestry Music, a rental session has been arranged for Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 6:30 – 7:45 pm. at Marigold School.

String instruments can also be rented from School District #61.  Rental sessions will be held at the Cooper-Smith Music Library Centre (CSMLC) located at the back of Rockheights Middle School, 1250 Highrock Avenue.

The CSMLC rental sessions will be held on:

  • Thursday, Sept. 12 from 4 – 7 pm.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 4 – 6 pm.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 4 – 6 pm.

Unless purchasing from the Tapestry Music or Long and McQuade’s online programs, please avoid purchasing instruments on-line. These instruments are often of poor quality and are difficult to maintain.  They may need to have extra work done on them by a qualified strings technician (luthier) to make them playable, the cost of which is often higher than the original price of the instrument.

To ensure continuity of instruction, and to accommodate various learning styles, students enrolling in the program are expected to participate for the entire year.  Regular attendance and home practice are also essential for success in this class.

On the attached form please indicate which instrument your child would like to play, and confirm that your child will participate in the Marigold Strings Program for the full year.  Kindly return this form to my attention at the Marigold School office or forward to me by email.

I would like to meet with any interested students in the gym on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the regular class time of 10:45.

Thank you!

Mrs. K. Whyte
